Where Does the Time Go?! Wasn't It Just 8:07?

And when did it become Wednesday?.

Cartoon of an overwhelmed school counselor surrounded by emails, meetings, student needs, and a spinning clock, illustrating how quickly a school day disappears.

You know those mornings when you walk into school with a beautifully organized to-do list, a fresh cup of coffee, and the completely unreasonable belief that you're actually going to finish everything today?

It's 8:07 a.m. Plan in motion....

You're going to answer those emails, finish your counseling lesson, make the copies, check in with a few students, return a parent phone call, and maybe—just MAYBE—eat lunch with your favorite emotional support teacher.

Then school happens.

A student needs to talk. Another needs help navigating a friendship situation. Someone stops by with a quick question (which, as we all know, has never actually been quick).

Your phone rings. There's a meeting you forgot about. A teacher needs support. And somehow, you've accumulated twelve more things on your to-do list without crossing off a single one.

You finally glance at the clock.

2:47 P.M.

EXCUSE ME?!?!

Wasn't it JUST 8:07?!

And the lunch break? Yeah, you haven't even eaten breakfast yet.

But here's something I've been thinking about.

Sometimes the things that interrupt our plans are actually the things that matter most.

That student who needed five minutes? Maybe those five minutes changed their entire day.

That teacher who stopped by? Maybe they needed someone to listen just as much as their students do.

And that counseling lesson you didn't quite finish planning?

Well... there's always tomorrow and our good friend AI.

The truth is, school counselors and educators spend so much of their time responding to everyone else's needs that it's easy to feel like we've accomplished absolutely nothing.

But a checked-off to-do list isn't the only measure of a meaningful day.

Sometimes the most important work we do never makes it onto the list.

Let's Talk!

Where does YOUR school day disappear?

Is it the meetings? The emails? The constant interruptions? Or those “Do you have just a second?” conversations that turn into 30 minutes? I avoid the hallways during class change because I may never get back to my office at all.

Tell me I'm not the only one who looks at the clock and wonders what happened to the entire day!

And if you've figured out how to fit in some time to speak to other adults about something that is not school related, PLEASE share your secrets. Some of us are struggling out here.

Connection first. Keep it practical. Make it fun.
